Upbeat Walker looks forward in 2012

PCS’s Managing Director, Phil Walker, has forecast an upbeat 2012 as the company goes into its 40th year.

Press Computer Systems spun out of the IT department of one of the UK’s biggest evening newspapers, the Wolverhampton-based Express & Star, in 1973.

Then, PCS were the creators of a new ‘electronic’ editorial system for newspapers, Press 11, while this week marks the third anniversary of their latest offering, Knowledge, going live with the West Midlands Chronicles series of the Express & Star and its sister paper, the Shropshire Star.

Writing in his blog, Above the Cloud at http://pcsabovethecloud.blogspot.com Walker says: “Last year we took the decision to face the volatility of the tablet landscape head on by giving ourselves the option of building digital content delivery mechanisms in our Knowledge digital content management and publishing solution in HTML5, so giving ourselves and our customers more options for their web, tablet and smart phone offerings.”

Commenting on the imminent changes to the tablet landscape, with developments from Apple, Kindle and Google all in the pipeline, he adds: “We have an idea what’s coming and we’re ready for the opportunities they will bring.

“That doesn’t mean, of course, that there won’t be some other disruptive technology ready to smack the industry straight between the eyes all over again. We’d like to think we’d be ready for that, too.”

Says Walker: “We’re actually quite excited about what lies ahead – and we might just have some more exciting news of our own to announce in the very near future.”

That optimism is built on a positive reaction to PCS’s return to Ifra Expo, an increasing exposure for Knowledge in sectors that are not necessarily publishing-centric and the beginnings of much greater awareness around the whole PCS product set brought on by working closely with UK Trade and Investment both in Europe and the United States of America.
